Department of Physics and Energy

The mission of the Department of Physics and Energy of the University of Limerick is to inspire enquiry, excellence and innovation in physics and energy, with one of its key roles to conduct applied and fundamental research in the area of physics and energy, and in so doing, to promote these subjects in society.

Department of Chemical and Environmental Science (CES)

Energy-related research in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Science includes process and physico-chemical analysis of carbon nanoforms for cryosorption, supercapacitors, batteries and direct carbon fuel cells.

A major strength of the department is in pharmaceutical chemistry and biomedical research. The University of Limerick hosts the Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC).

Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC)

The Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC) is a Global Hub of Pharmaceutical Process Innovation and Advanced Manufacturing, funded by Science Foundation Ireland and industry. It is a unique collaboration between 24 industry partners, 9 research performing organisations and 12 international academic collaborators.

The SSPC leads the way for next generation drug manufacture and spans the entire pharmaceutical production chain from synthesis of the molecule, to the isolation of the material, and the formulation of the medicine. Prof. Gavin Walker, in the University of Limerick, jointly leads Strand 3: Drug Product Formulation and Manufacture.

Bernal Project

Materials and Surface Science Institute (MSSI)

The Materials & Surface Science Institute is a centre of excellence, with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, generating state-of-the-art research on topics of industrial significance in the fields of surface science and materials.

One of MSSI's priority research themes is Materials for Energy & Environment, focussing on applications in Transport, Energy and Clean Technology. Work in this theme includes the characterization of electroceramic materials.

Bernal Project

The Bernal Project is a €52 million strategic investment in research excellence at the University of Limerick. This investment will expand research capacity in Applied Sciences & Engineering through the provision of state-of-the art laboratory facilities (the Analog Devices Building, adjoining MSSI) together with the creation of new Professorship positions (Bernal Chairs) to build a multi-disciplinary team of world-leading scientists and engineers at the University of Limerick. Profs. Glowacki and Walker hold Bernal Chairs.
